The Student Library Research Award Committee is extremely pleased to announce the recipients of the 2010 Student Library Research Award sponsored by the Friends of the Wellesley College Library.

Lillian Wies '10 has won the 300 level award for her ARTH 341 paper: "The Political Narrative as Expressed through Northern Song Landscape Painting: An introduction to the topic by examining Guo Xi's Early Spring and Old Trees, Level Distance." Supporting faculty: Heping Liu

Journal Cancellation Review 2010

We are reviewing the library's journal subscriptions in anticipation of a $200,000 (approximately 9%) budget reduction for FY11. This is the first systematic, across-the-board journal review that the library has undertaken since 2003. The review will include any materials or services for which we are billed on an annual basis: journals, magazines, newspapers, monographic series, abstracting and indexing services, reference resources, microfilm, and government documents.

We have attempted to minimize the impact of these cancellations by targeting journals we receive from multiple sources. These might include journal archives such as JSTOR or databases like Academic Search Complete. Maintaining balanced support for subject areas has also been considered in identifying titles, especially in the case of smaller or newer academic programs.

We have specifically targeted low use journals (fewer than 5 uses per year, averaged over three years) or those with a high cost-per-use (over $100 per use); for such titles, it is less costly for the library to meet patron needs through interlibrary loan. Exceptions have been made for journals supporting courses taught every 2 or 3 years for which there is no other online access; for titles lacking sufficient use data; for titles with high quality images that aren't available in other sources; and for those journals where the available use data is inconclusive.

In order to make the best choices that will meet our budget reduction requirements while preserving essential resources, we want to give all faculty members the opportunity to review the titles being considered for cancellation. The journal cancellation title list includes journals (both print and electronic) that were selected by the subject librarians responsible for each subject area. The list includes data on cost and cost-per-use (when available), and on the availability of alternative means of access to articles. There are fewer science titles on the list because these journals have been managed using the cost per use criteria for the past two years providing $65,000 in savings over two years.

We invite substantive comments that you have regarding the titles that have been identified for cancellation.

The faculty comment period is March 10 to April 2, 2010

Centennial Celebration of the Margaret Clapp Library

Join us in the Margaret Clapp Library as we gather to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Clapp Library and the 25th Anniversary of the Friends of the Library with toasts, refreshments and birthday cake.

A photo exhibition in honor of the event will provide a retrospective look at the last century of the building, its people, and its functions. Festivities will include remarks by President Bottomly and others, and the announcement of the prize-winners of the Friends of the Library-sponsored Book Collecting Contest. In culmination, we will unveil the specially commissioned commemorative poster, created by renowned graphic designer and illustrator Lancy Hidy. Complimentary copies of the poster will be given to attendees and a deluxe injet printed edition will be available for purchase, signed by the artist. Poster sale proceeds will support the Library in its second century.

Reference sources recognize gay marriage, too!

The way a dictionary defines a particular term might not seem like a big deal, until you learn that:

A 2006 friend-of-the-court brief filed on behalf of anti-gay-marriage organizations in a Maryland marriage case cited no fewer than seven dictionaries to make its point. And when the Iowa Supreme Court legalized gay marriage last week, it ignored the state's plea to abide by a dictionary definition that limited marriage to 'the legal union of a man and a woman.' (slate.com)

In other words: there's a lot at stake in the way key dictionaries (like The American Heritage Dictionary, Black's Law Dictionary, and Webster's) define marriage. So what happens when legal & cultural definitions of marriage change? Dictionaries change, too! In an article published yesterday on Slate.com, Daniel Redman discusses the ways in which these research resources are recognizing gay marriage and same-sex unions You can read the full article here. Happy 200th Birthday Charles Darwin!

Today - February 12, 2009 - is the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birthday. Wellesley College is holding several events in Darwin's honor.

On Thursday February 12 at 4p.m., join selected Wellesley faculty for a symposium entitled Darwin's Impact. This event will be held in Tishman Commons in the Campus Center.
Be sure to stop by Clapp Library this month to view the exhibit Before and Beyond Darwin, which showcases Wellesley College's Special Collections books by scientists who predated Darwin, Darwin's (scientist) ancestors, a first edition of On the Origin of Species, and special editions of works by scientists who followed in Darwin's footsteps.
The capstone event of the College's Darwin Celebration is a lecture by Olivia Judson, a research fellow at Imperial College London and blogger for the New York Times. Judson will deliver Wellesley’s 2009 Wilson Lecture, Glad to Have Evolved, Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 8 pm in Jewett Auditorium.

20th Century Advice Literature includes such gems as Bed Manners: How to Bring Sunshine Into Your Nights (1934), How to Be Happy Though Civil (1909), The Girl's Place In Life and How To Find It (1942), and Advice to the Lonely, Frustrated and Confused (1972).

American Broadsides & Ephemera, 1760-1900 is amazing primary source collection of playbills, posters, sheet music, tracts, and other short-lived texts and images that document the 18th and 19th centuries in America.

Global Road Warrior: No, not an alternative to WoW...if you're traveling or studying abroad, here's a wealth of practical information organized by country: money and banking, personal safety, internet café locations, health and medical, and much more.

Birds of North America Online is an incredible window on North American bird behavior, habitat, reproduction and more. Life histories of each species include image/video galleries & sound recordings of their calls. How tweet it is!

Thanksgiving comes only a couple of weeks before the end of fall semester. Many of you take your papers and research projects home with you over break. Fortunately, you can take the library home with you too!

Almost all of our databases are accessible from home using your OneCard name and 16-digit number. Details can be found on the off-campus access page.
If you have questions for the librarians, you can AskUs! until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, starting again on Sunday at 2 p.m.
If you plan on staying at Wellesley for the long weekend, library hours are limited. You may want to consider using the Wellesley Free Library instead.

New Collection: Clapp Bestsellers

IS is pleased to announce the debut of a new collection of library books, Clapp Bestsellers, featuring new and recent fiction and non-fiction in hardcover. This collection of newly-published books will feature a mix of recreational and thought-provoking titles.

The Clapp Bestsellers collection is located in the Recreational Reading Room, Clapp Library, on the shelves just outside the Sanger Room. You'll recognize Clapp Bestsellers by their dust jackets and mylar covers.

We're renting these books via a library supplier; this is a rotating collection, with new titles added monthly. Just as with our regular Recreational Reading Collection, we invite you to help pick books for the collection. Let Pam Bristah (x2076) know if there are new books you'd like to see added.

Papyrus to Print to Pixel on iTunes U

Join Mary French '09 and Josephine Corlett '08 as they examine the work they and classmates did in EXTD 240: Papyrus to Print to Pixel, co-taught by Ruth R. Rogers in Special Collections and Katherine McCanless Ruffin of the Book Arts Program.

The original presentation was delivered April 20, 2008 at the Ruhlman Conference at Wellesley College. The recording took place later, and was modified especially for the iTunes U format and includes dozens of images. The abstract of the presentation reads:

The class of EXTD 240, “Papyrus to Print to Pixel,” spent the spring semester learning about the history of written communication, using hands-on experience to gain a unique perspective on the subject. Recreating clay tablets, papyrus sheets and scrolls, early codex book structures, and medieval manuscripts, as well as experimenting with early printing methods, mechanical printing, and ondemand printing, the students of “Papyrus to Print to Pixel” experienced first-hand the evolution of the technology behind the written word. Through lab sessions, group discussion, and experiential learning, the group gained a truly in-depth understanding of the subject matter by applying knowledge of lecture material to relevant projects. Our interactive presentation will share with the Wellesley community our wonderful and truly unique encounters with the history of written communication and we hope that our audience will gain from it as well.

Library Research Award recipients!

The Student Library Research Award Committee is extremely pleased to announce the recipients of the first Student Library Research Award sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Jennifer Schwarzkopf '09 has won the 300 level award for her ENG 385 paper "Vanity Fair: A 'Crooked Mirror' for Society". Supporting faculty: Lisa Rodensky.

Catherine Caruso '10 has won the 100/200 level award for her BISC 201 paper: "My Memory Place: A History of Ecological Change in Belmont, Massachusetts". Supporting faculty: Glenn Adelson.

Both the award recipients demonstrated excellent and diverse use of library resources and went beyond the resources of Wellesley when the need warranted.

We had a total of 22 applicants for these first awards and the award will be given for at least the next 2 years. Vist the award web site for more information.

Are you interested in librarianship as a career?

Apply for one of two available summer library internships funded by the Mellon Foundation for Wellesley College students.

The Mellon Librarian Recruitment Program is an innovative, multi-tiered approach to increasing interest and diversity in the library profession.

The internships last for 10 weeks and are full-time (35 hours per week). One student will be chosen to intern at the Wellesley College Library, and the second student may choose an offsite location and serve as an intern at another facility.

Upgrading the Web of Science

The Web of Science database - arguably one of the top databases for the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and interdisciplinary studies - changed to a new interface yesterday. How do we know this? It's green! And we think it's a lot easier to use now too.

You can do all the same things in Web of Science that you could before this change, including cited reference searching (i.e. you have an article and want to find out who has cited it since it was written), searching only portions of the Web of Science database through the "limits and settings" option, and accessing it from off-campus with your OneCard information.

You can also login to your EndNoteWeb account and save citations from Web of Science to that account with the click of a button.

Exhibit: Ingredients & Implements: The Raw Materials and Tools of Books

The Wellesley College Library is pleased to announce a new exhibition:

"Ingredients & Implements: The Raw Materials and Tools of Books"
A Joint Book Arts Lab and Conservation Facility Exhibition
Crozier Reference Room, Second Floor of Clapp Library, Wellesley, MA
Through December 20, 2007

This exhibit features the raw materials and tools used to make books by hand. Plant fibers, pigments, parchment, bone, type, ink, leather, cloth and gold leaf are displayed in conjunction with the tools used to make these materials into the information transmission device we call the book. The materials and tools were selected from the working resources of the Conservation Facility and the Book Arts Lab on the Fourth Floor of Clapp Library. Emily Bell, Senior Library Associate/Conservation, and Katherine McCanless Ruffin, Book Arts Program Director, collaborated on the exhibition.

Good news: we now have access to the Arts & Humanities Citation Index, and to additional content in the Social Sciences Citation Index and the Science Citation Index from Web of Science.

The updated subscription allows you to search citations for the following years:

New: Two Databases Cover the 18th & 19th Centuries

We've just added two more databases for research in all disciplines:

British Periodicals lets you keyword-search the full text facsimiles of more than 160 British periodicals from the late 17th to the early 20th century, covering literature, philosophy, history, science, the fine arts and social science. When complete, it will comprise some6 million searchable pages from almost 500 periodical runs published from the 1680s to the 1930s.

Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals, 1824-1900 is widely considered to be the most important general index to British periodicals of the 19th century. Most articles of this period were published anonymously or under pseudonyms, and index identifies authors of articles in 45 major Victorian periodicals, with a bibliography for each contributor. Most conveniently, entries link to the full text in British Periodicals.

Choice Reviews for Academic Libraries is the premier source for reviews of academic books, electronic media, and Internet resources of interest to those in higher education. More than 35,000 librarians, faculty, and key decision makers rely on Choice magazine and ChoiceReviews.online for collection development and scholarly research. Choice reaches almost every undergraduate college and university library in the United States.

Those that want to reap the benefits of customization, can create their own passwords by clicking on the My Profile button or where it says "Register here to Create a Profile". You can then click on My Monthly Reviews and see what has been reviewed that is connected to your Profile. This is extremely beneficial to faculty. Featured: Asian American Drama

In honor of Asian Awareness month, the Library puts the spotlight on an online collection of Asian American plays:

Asian American Drama includes full scripts of plays by well-known dramatists such as Philip Kan Gotanda, Elizabeth Wong, Jeannie Barroga, and Wakako Yamaguchi, and emerging playwrights, including Prince Gomolvilas, Uma Parameswaran, and Bina Sharif. The collection represents various ethnicities within the Asian American community, including writers of Japanese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Chinese, Hawaiian, Indian, Thai, Korean, Persian, and Malaysian background. It also includes information on playwrights, casts, credits, and production information, playbills, and other resources.

You can find and search Asian American Drama via the Library's Databases A-Z list, or can find individual plays in the Library catalog, listed by author and title. For example, see the catalog entry for Philip Kan Gotanda’s play, Ballad of Yachiyo and click through to the play script.

Apply for Mellon Library Internship!

Are you interested in librarianship as a career? Apply for one of two available summer library internships funded by the Mellon Foundation for Wellesley College students.

The internships last for 10 weeks and are full-time (35 hours per week). One intern will work in the Wellesley College Libraries, and one intern will work at an off-campus site, to be determined based upon the interests of the intern.

New Staff: Welcome Laura Reiner

The Research & Instruction Group, along with the rest of IS, welcomes Laura Reiner as one of our new Research and Instruction Librarians.

Laura started work at Wellesley College on January 24, 2007. She has an MLS from Simmons College and more than 4 years' of experience at Brandeis University, where she was Reference Librarian and Digital Services Coordinator. We are eager to add her expertise to our talent pool. She will be supporting the library research and instruction needs of the anthropology, history, Spanish, and sociology departments, as well as the Latin American studies program.
